We’ve literally become a society that judges a book by its cover.
The message from the author is that gang involvement and gun violence has a beautiful illusion to the youth in urban communities as a way to be accepted and loved. However underneath it all, is bloodshed, death and horror.
There is a current controversy over the appropriateness of the cover simply because it has a gun on it and it is on a recommended reading list for middle school aged children. If anything, children in at risk geographic areas need this book more than ever. Let’s not judge people. The message is much needed. If the cover gets attention and controversy it is doing its job.
